The Miniaturist

3 stars

I didn’t care for this book as much as her other, later novel, The Muse.

It was different than I expected. It certainly didn’t have a lot to do with the miniaturist. It was just a story of a girl trying to get through life. She was married off to a wealthy merchant, who sought out a wife to cover up the fact that he was gay. So its just the story of this girl’s unpleasant life. For once I was actually hoping for a romantic component to add some joy to the characters existence. Although, I’m torn, I’m always happy when a novel doesn’t need to rely on that to fill out their plot.

It was well written, the author is very good. I would seek out more novels by her. I just wouldn’t re-read this one.
